It’s an election year in Rockville, and we are going to make an attempt to interview all the candidates to get to know them a little better as people and community leaders.
One of the emerging themes on the candidate websites is public safety. Defining that will be important, as all sorts of sub-topics could fall under that category. Avoiding the dog-whistle assumptions and fear-mongering that can come with “public safety” will rely on clarity and consistent messaging. Does a candidate’s vision include safety from police violence and a community commitment to justice reforms? Does safety include walkable streets? Are we going to get a replay of 2019’s straw horse on immigration (municipalities have little to no control over immigration). We live in a community that includes a PD committed to community policing and are true partners to our neighborhoods, and a city-wide commitment to Vision Zero and a more walkable community–building on that and setting the City up for more and better, along with how to get there, will be an important thing for voters to listen for.
